descrizione Oil on Canvas Framed

Santa Catherine d'Alexandria, a virgin and martyr of royal origin, presented here with its main attributes: the crown, palm and wheel tooth instrument of its martyrdom. The work is an interesting product of the young phase of Francesco Solimena, probably in the ninth decade of the 17th still linked to the intensely clarified style of Father Angelo and well-memory of his master Francesco Guarino and Massimo Stanzione, but not immune from the example of Luca Giordano. A painter who is already capable of exercising full classical control of the composition and possessing very refined colorist means. In this respect, we can establish a fairly eloquent comparison between our canvas and works such as the Saint Rosalia collection in Pisani, Samson and Dalila of the Herzog Anton Ullrich Museum, Braunschweig, the Moses Research of St Petersburg.
